Growing up as a kid, the North Fork of Long Island was still ‘undiscovered’ and primarily a farming and fishing community. My first jobs as a teenager were working as a mate on party and charter fishing boats and it was here that I developed a love for the water. That passion lead me to obtaining my captains license and operating my own charter boat for a number of years, and subsequently, providing lessons to new boaters, working as a tow boat operator, and private captain.

Fast forward a number of years, the North Fork now attracts visitors by the tens of thousands each year to enjoy our bays and sip some vino at one of the many vineyards that have sprung up. I’ve also evolved and these days I bring my experience and passion for the water to Marine Surveying. I pride myself in attention to detail and partnering with each customer on their project. I particularly appreciate helping new boaters with pre-purchase surveys, helping them to find the right vessel for them. I look forward to partnering with you on your next boating project.

41 North Marine

Location: South Kingstown, RI 02879

I am a SAMS® Accredited Marine Surveyor and owner of 41 North Marine located in Southern RI at Ram Point Marina in Wakefield. With 40-plus years of recreational boating experience and over 25 years of commercial maritime experience, including yacht captain/engineer, tow boat captain/salvage diver, technician, and delivery captain, I am more than familiar with boats and assessing/handling the issues that plague them. I have also achieved my ABYC Master Marine Technician Certification and have extensive experience working as a marine technician on all types of vessels. I have surveyed a vast array of power and sailboats from 13 feet to 107 feet, but no matter what type of boat or the size, when it comes to surveying, above all else, safety is of the utmost importance. That's not to say that issues that could potentially devalue or compromise the integrity of a vessel are not a priority; they are, but issues that cause a vessel to be unsafe must be brought to light more than anything else and are not as easy to detect and evaluate as one might think. The function of the marine surveyor is to reveal any issues that could potentially detract from the value and integrity of the vessel but, most importantly, any issues that would cause the vessel to be unsafe.

“Great team of knowledgeable guys. Did a very thorough survey on a 61 Princess I was buying and found all sorts of things that I'm sure the average surveyor would miss, including a section of wet deck that will be pricey to repair. Reasonably priced and very good communication. Got the report back in 24 hours.“

Marine Surveyor FAQs

What does a marine surveyor do?

A marine surveyor is a trained professional who inspects boats and yachts to assess their condition, safety, and value. They provide detailed reports that are often required for buying or selling a vessel, obtaining insurance, or meeting regulatory requirements.

When should I hire a marine surveyor?

You should hire a marine surveyor whenever you’re purchasing a used boat, renewing insurance, after major repairs or modifications, or if you simply want an expert evaluation of your boat’s current condition and value.

What types of surveys can a marine surveyor perform?

Marine surveyors typically offer several types of surveys including pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, appraisal surveys, and damage surveys. Each survey is tailored to a specific need—whether it’s determining fair market value or assessing damage after an incident.

How long does a marine survey take?

The time depends on the size and complexity of the vessel. On average, a standard pre-purchase marine survey can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, with a detailed report delivered within a few days.

How much does a marine survey cost?

Costs vary based on the boat’s size, type, and the scope of the survey. Most marine surveyors charge a per-foot rate, typically ranging from $20 to $30 per foot, plus additional fees for haul-outs or specialized inspections.

Will a marine surveyor sea trial the boat?

Many pre-purchase surveys include a sea trial where the marine surveyor tests the boat on the water to evaluate its performance, handling, and onboard systems. Be sure to confirm whether a sea trial is included before booking.

Do I need a marine survey for boat insurance?

Most insurance companies require a current marine survey to underwrite or renew a boat insurance policy, especially for older vessels. The survey helps them understand the boat’s condition and risk factors.

How do I choose the right marine surveyor?

Look for a surveyor who is accredited by organizations like SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors), has experience with your type of boat, and provides sample reports for review.
