I was born in Whakatane, a small coastal town on the North Island of New Zealand, and started working in the commercial fishing industry as a teenager. Eventually, I owned and operated a 30-ft fishing vessel. My first yachting experience was helping to build and then captain a 72-ft sailing yacht. I sailed across the Pacific, up to Alaska, and through the Panama Canal, finally ending up in Fort Lauderdale. During this process, I learned the finer points of boat building, boat maintenance, engineering, seamanship, navigation, and international diplomacy, which has stood me in good stead ever since.

I’ve sailed diagonally across the Pacific Ocean twice, crossed the Atlantic in sailing and motor yachts on several occasions, and sailed throughout the Mediterranean Sea, the entire Caribbean chain of islands, both coasts of the United States, Central America, the Panama Canal (three times), Southeast Asia, and numerous South Pacific Islands.

I’ve captained Super Yachts ranging from 72 ft to 184 ft, both sail and motor, for over 40 years, and always taken an active role in the engineering and maintenance of these vessels. I’ve managed various refits in foreign countries and the United States, overseeing Lloyds of London annual, 5-year, 10-year, and 25-year surveys. Memorable events include emergency repairs to a propeller shaft on an 184-ft sailing yacht in the USVI, replacing a stabilizer on a 130-ft motor yacht in Antigua, and refits in Singapore, Thailand, and Spain.

My wife, Dawn, and I decided to make Savannah home. The mild winters and friendly, welcoming locals won us over!

I started working as a marine surveyor for a local company in 2017, which included 18 months in a formal National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) apprenticeship program. My 40 years as a Yacht Captain/Engineer and formal marine surveyor training ensure that I have the knowledge and skills to be an accomplished Marine Surveyor.

I created Wainui Marine Surveying in 2019 and operate in the Savannah, Hilton Head, Brunswick, Charleston, and Jacksonville areas.

“Great team of knowledgeable guys. Did a very thorough survey on a 61 Princess I was buying and found all sorts of things that I'm sure the average surveyor would miss, including a section of wet deck that will be pricey to repair. Reasonably priced and very good communication. Got the report back in 24 hours.“

Marine Surveyor FAQs

What does a marine surveyor do?

A marine surveyor is a trained professional who inspects boats and yachts to assess their condition, safety, and value. They provide detailed reports that are often required for buying or selling a vessel, obtaining insurance, or meeting regulatory requirements.

When should I hire a marine surveyor?

You should hire a marine surveyor whenever you’re purchasing a used boat, renewing insurance, after major repairs or modifications, or if you simply want an expert evaluation of your boat’s current condition and value.

What types of surveys can a marine surveyor perform?

Marine surveyors typically offer several types of surveys including pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, appraisal surveys, and damage surveys. Each survey is tailored to a specific need—whether it’s determining fair market value or assessing damage after an incident.

How long does a marine survey take?

The time depends on the size and complexity of the vessel. On average, a standard pre-purchase marine survey can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, with a detailed report delivered within a few days.

How much does a marine survey cost?

Costs vary based on the boat’s size, type, and the scope of the survey. Most marine surveyors charge a per-foot rate, typically ranging from $20 to $30 per foot, plus additional fees for haul-outs or specialized inspections.

Will a marine surveyor sea trial the boat?

Many pre-purchase surveys include a sea trial where the marine surveyor tests the boat on the water to evaluate its performance, handling, and onboard systems. Be sure to confirm whether a sea trial is included before booking.

Do I need a marine survey for boat insurance?

Most insurance companies require a current marine survey to underwrite or renew a boat insurance policy, especially for older vessels. The survey helps them understand the boat’s condition and risk factors.

How do I choose the right marine surveyor?

Look for a surveyor who is accredited by organizations like SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors), has experience with your type of boat, and provides sample reports for review.
