Offshore Marine Survey, LLC is owned and operated by John VanTol, a Surveyor Associate and member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors®. We provide surveys throughout the Great Lakes and surrounding areas. We are trained, certified and insured. When not in the office or the field we spend much of our free time on our home waters of Lake St. Clair. Growing up in the waterfront communities of Harrison Twp. and Harsens Island gave my passion for boating a jump start to say the least. I worked my way through high school and college by working at local marinas and wooden boat restoration shops, in my spare time I either helped my father in the garage restoring one of his many boat projects or I was out on the water in my boat. At the age of 23 I became a member of the Harrison Twp. Fire Department where I am now a 20 year veteran. Being a fire fighter in a waterfront community has given me first hand experience of why it is so important to have a boat that is properly equipped, maintained, and operated. During these past years I attended Wooden Boat School in Brooklyn Maine for Marine Surveying (2002), started Marine Surveying in 2003, continuously done numerous boat repair projects and restorations, maintained a fleet of 4 award winning antique wooden boats for a private estate for 10+ years, aquired my USCG 50 Ton Masters Captain License in 2012, and have been working as a fishing and waterfowl charter captain.

My years of being fully immersed in the marine industry have given me the knowledge and tools needed to assist my clients in finding the boat that is a good fit for their needs, is properly equipped to provide them many safe years of recreation out on the water, and how to get the most value for their money.

I also reference the following organizations standards when conducting my surveys: NFPA, USCG CFR, and NADA Guide. My memberships with the previously listed organizations ensures that the survey you receive will be accepted by your lending institution and your insurance provider.

Simply stated, boats are my life. When I am not out working on a survey it’s a safe bet that I am spending time on the water with my daughter showing her how to be a safe and courteous boater.

My name is Les Salliotte. I am a member of The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors and hold the designation of Accredited Marine Surveyor with Yacht and Small Craft Specialty. I am the owner and primary surveyor of Downriver Marine Surveyors. I have been doing Marine Surveys for 30 years. I apprenticed under Lloyd Affholter and took over the business from Lloyd. I have always specialized in Condition and Valuation (C&V) surveys on pleasure boats. Most years I perform about 150 Surveys. A high percentage of the surveys are done on Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) boats.

I work solely for my client. Therefore, no information is shared with any parties without prior consent of my client excepting if I find a condition that could cause imminent harm to life or property I will notify the proper persons. My reports are delivered via e-mail as a pdf file. The file is yours to do with what you'd like. All reports are completed in a timely manner and are usually twelve pages in length. Numerous digital photographs are taken with pertinent pictures included in the report.

My report is based on compliance with the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and local laws when applicable. The report must contain some specialized nautical language but I also make sure it is understandable without specialized knowledge.

I encourage my client to be present during the Marine Survey. It takes longer, but you will learn as we go. You will see, hear and touch what I am testing, how I am testing it and whether the test is positive or negative. It will be an interesting day and will make reading of the report much easier or even unnecessary. In the end you will have a greater understanding of the vessel and her systems.

I don't just want to survey this boat for you, I want to survey every boat you ever own.

I have never had a Marine Survey report rejected for lack of thoroughness or competency.
