I service Michigan and central and southern Florida.

Why choose M.E. to perform your survey?

My life long interest in boats has propelled me into a career as a marine surveyor. My interest in boats, curiosity, and level of attention to detail have become recognizable qualities in my work. My goal is to be the one person that you know you can turn to when you have a question about a boat, boating, or you just don’t know who else to ask.

Attention to Detail: As an accountant, I.T. Manager, and medium sized business manager, success is in the details.

Response Time: Scheduling the survey as soon as available, and notification if any cancellations.

Turn Around Time: With the use of up to date technology, I am completely paperless and able to turn around the Report of Marine Survey in an average of one business day after the completion of the inspection.

Rates and adjustments: Standard rates are per linear foot based on model length. I do offer a per hour rate if at anytime, during the inspection, you decide to not require the written report. This way you aren’t paying for something you don’t plan or need to use.

Travel: Not all surveyors are equal. Finding one surveyor, whom you trust, and who is willing to travel to the boat is important.

I am a 100GT Captain with more than 35 years in the marine industry as a professional captain, marine technician, rigger, salesman, and more I have seen just about anything and everything in the marine industry you can think of.

Working for dealerships during much of my career, I was responsible for inspecting many of the trade-ins taken in for resale. It was my job to review boats before the dealerships agreed to make a deal, and then inspect the boats for necessary repairs or improvements once a boat was traded in.

I also worked as a professional marine mechanic for most of my marine career and hold a folder full of marine industry certifications including Mercruiser Master Technician.

My extensive marine education and experience cover structural, electrical, plumbing, drivetrain, electronics, and any other system or accessory onboard.

If you are interested in purchasing a boat that’s currently in or near West Michigan but you do not live in the area, I can be retained as your representative to inspect the boat and verify it’s been accurately advertised by the seller.

Once you are satisfied that the vessel is one you wish to purchase, I can also be retained to perform a complete marine Pre-purchase Survey if you wish.

I also provide Captain's service, delivery or relocation services, and boating lessons to be boaters or those who have moved up to a bigger boat. I love to teach people to drive and be more confident and safe on the water.

“Great team of knowledgeable guys. Did a very thorough survey on a 61 Princess I was buying and found all sorts of things that I'm sure the average surveyor would miss, including a section of wet deck that will be pricey to repair. Reasonably priced and very good communication. Got the report back in 24 hours.“

Marine Surveyor FAQs

What does a marine surveyor do?

A marine surveyor is a trained professional who inspects boats and yachts to assess their condition, safety, and value. They provide detailed reports that are often required for buying or selling a vessel, obtaining insurance, or meeting regulatory requirements.

When should I hire a marine surveyor?

You should hire a marine surveyor whenever you’re purchasing a used boat, renewing insurance, after major repairs or modifications, or if you simply want an expert evaluation of your boat’s current condition and value.

What types of surveys can a marine surveyor perform?

Marine surveyors typically offer several types of surveys including pre-purchase surveys, insurance surveys, appraisal surveys, and damage surveys. Each survey is tailored to a specific need—whether it’s determining fair market value or assessing damage after an incident.

How long does a marine survey take?

The time depends on the size and complexity of the vessel. On average, a standard pre-purchase marine survey can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, with a detailed report delivered within a few days.

How much does a marine survey cost?

Costs vary based on the boat’s size, type, and the scope of the survey. Most marine surveyors charge a per-foot rate, typically ranging from $20 to $30 per foot, plus additional fees for haul-outs or specialized inspections.

Will a marine surveyor sea trial the boat?

Many pre-purchase surveys include a sea trial where the marine surveyor tests the boat on the water to evaluate its performance, handling, and onboard systems. Be sure to confirm whether a sea trial is included before booking.

Do I need a marine survey for boat insurance?

Most insurance companies require a current marine survey to underwrite or renew a boat insurance policy, especially for older vessels. The survey helps them understand the boat’s condition and risk factors.

How do I choose the right marine surveyor?

Look for a surveyor who is accredited by organizations like SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors), has experience with your type of boat, and provides sample reports for review.
